TULSA, Okla. – Freshman
Brett Brocoff tied the Utah single-game record with 12 strikeouts in his career debut as the Utah baseball team fell to Oral Roberts, 3-0, to close out the three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
Utah out-hit Oral Roberts, 6-5, in the loss, led by
Rykker Tom and
Dominic Foscalina with two hits each.
Brocoff surrendered five hits, three runs and one walk over 5 1/3 innings in the loss. His 12 strikeouts is tied for the school record with Jason Price (2004), Stephen Fife (2008, twice), Brian Budrow (2008) and Mitch Watrous (2013).
Also pitching for the Utes was
Justin Kelly,
Josh Lapiana and
Spencer Kevin Johnson, who did not allow a hit over a combined 2 2/3 innings pitched.
Oral Roberts got on the board in the second inning after a pair of hits led to a run. The Golden Eagles added two runs in the sixth inning. A leadoff walk scored on an RBI single and a second run scored on a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
Utah had runners on base in five different innings. The Utes stranded two on in the third after a walk and a single, and Foscalina led off the seventh with a single but ORU got out of the inning with a double play.
The Utes return to the field next weekend in Surprise, Ariz., facing Ohio State and Nebraska beginning on Thursday, Feb. 22.
