The highlight of the opening weekend for the Utes (0-3) was freshman pitcher
Brett Brocoff, who tied the school record with 12 strikeouts against Oral Roberts. He was named a
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Player of the Week for the performance. Brocoff's 12 K's was tied for the second-most in the nation by a pitcher after the first weekend, and was the most by a Pac-12 pitcher. Senior pitcher
Tanner Thomas also had a strong start, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts (second in the Pac-12) and allowing one unearned run on two hits over 5 1/2 innings pitched.
At the plate,
Dominic Foscalina and
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., each had four hits. Foscalina and
Erick Migueles each hit a home run while Keirsey went 2-for-2 in stolen bases.
Ohio State is 3-1 to start the season. Senior Noah McGowan hit .400 with 13 RBI during the first weekend of the year.
Nebraska opened its season at 3-1 as well, which included a pair of wins against Washington State, and are led by senior preseason All-American Luis Alvarado.
