SALT LAKE CITY—The Utah football staff received commitments from 14 recruits today on National Signing Day. Seven others signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period (Dec. 20-Jan. 15). "We feel we addressed our needs with the makeup of this class," said Whittingham. "Two of our biggest areas of concentration were at defensive line and tight end and we believe we definitely helped ourselves at both of those positions. We were able to add some real playmakers on both sides of the ball and are anxious to begin working with this recruiting class as soon as we can. As is always the case, our assistants did a great job evaluating talent all over the country and putting together a quality group of student-athletes to join our program here at the University of Utah."
Â
Including a returned missionary who is already enrolled in school, Utah's 2018 class has 18 freshmen and four junior college transfers. The positions gaining the most players were the defensive line with six and the secondary with four, followed by wide receiver and tight end with three apiece.
Â
Utah gained recruits from nine states and Australia. Leading the way were Utah (5), California (5) and Texas (4), but the Utes also made big inroads in the South, signing two players apiece from Florida and one from Louisiana, Georgia and Kentucky. The remaining three signees came from Arizona, Nevada and Australia.
             Â
Among this year's scholarship counters are former walk-ons Paul Toala and senior Matt Gay (awarded scholarships last fall), as well as returning missionaries Quinn Fabrizio, Cole Fotheringham and R.J. Hubert, who originally signed back in 2015 and 2016.
Â
Already enrolled in classes and participating in offseason conditioning with the team are Fabrizio and early signees Vonte Davis, Jeremiah Jordan, Malone Mataele and Jack Tuttle.
