LOS ANGELES – The Utah baseball team came out on the wrong end of a no hitter on Thursday evening, falling 2-0 in its Pac-12 opener at USC.
Joshua Tedeschi was strong over 6 1/3 innings pitched for the Utes, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Spencer Kevin Johnson and
Trenton Stoltz also pitched in the late innings. Stoltz entered the game with the bases loaded and got a ground out to end the threat.
Tedeschi and USC's Kyle Hurt kept runners off the board until the Trojans broke through in the fifth for a run on three hits. USC took a 2-0 lead in the seventh inning after a leadoff single and wild pitch led to a run on an RBI single.
Six different Utes reached base on walks. Utah had two on with one out in the third inning after back-to-back walks before a strikeout and ground out got USC out of the inning, and left two on in the fourth after a pair of walks with two outs before a fly out.
The Utes (1-15) and Trojans play game two of the series on Friday, March 16, at 7:00 p.m. PT/8:00 p.m. MT. The game will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks.
