THE GAME
The Utah Runnin' Utes (21-11) will head to Moraga, Calif., to take on the St. Mary's Gaels (30-5) in the quarterfinals of the NIT, this Wednesday, March 21. Tip-off between the Utes and Gaels is set for 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT.

COVERING THE RUNNIN' UTES
Wednesday's contest against the Gaels will be televised live on ESPN2. Ted Embrich will call the action and Mark Wise will be on-hand to offer color commentary for the broadcast.

UTAH IN THE NIT
This marks the 44th post-season appearance in school history, and the 14th appearance for the Utes in the NIT. Utah is making its second-consecutive NIT appearance after earning an at-large bid into the tournament last season.

Following its win over LSU in the second round, the Utes are now 13-12 all-time in the NIT. Utah won the NIT in 1947 as head coach Vadal Peterson's team defeated Kentucky (49-45) behind the play of Vern Gardner, who was named the tournament's MVP. The Utes reached the NIT Championship again in 1974, but fell to Purdue. Despite the loss, Mike Sojourner was named MVP.

In 1992, Utah lost in the semifinals to Notre Dame but won the third-place game against Florida. The Utes fell to Memphis in the first-round of the 1992 NIT Championship.

Utah moved to 4-2 all-time when hosting a game in the NIT. Monday's win over the LSU Tigers marked Utah's first two-game winning streak and advancement into the quarterfinal round of the NIT since 1992.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah opened Monday's game against LSU with a 7-2 run and later used a 12-5 run to push its lead to 19-7, on the way to routing the Tigers 97-71 at the Huntsman Center.

All five starters scored in double figures, led by
Sedrick Barefield's 17 points and
Justin Bibbins' 16 points on the evening.
Gabe Bealer followed with 13 points, while both
David Collette and
Tyler Rawson poured in 12 points each.

Jayce Johnson scored eight points off the bench and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Utah won the battle of the boards 37-26, which included seven offensive boards to LSU's total of five offensive rebounds.

The Utes shot better than 50 percent from the field in each quarter, including a game-best 70.6 percent effort in the first quarter. Utah outscored the Tigers 30-11 in the first quarter on the way to a season-high 95 points in the game.

SCOUTING St. MAry's
St. Mary's is coming off an 85-81 home-win over Washington in the second round of the NIT this past Monday. The Gaels led by as many as 16 points before the Huskies roared back to get within a possession of the home team. St. Mary's prevailed down the stretch though, advancing to the NIT quarterfinal round for the third time in school history.

St. Mary's, who is the No. 1 seed in the quadrant, moved to 30-5 overall on the season. The 30 wins are a new school record for the Gaels. The Gaels went 16-2 overall in the West Coast Conference. SMU is 18-1 at home on the season with its only loss at McKeon Pavilion coming back on Feb. 10, to then No. 12-ranked Gonzaga (78-65).

The Gaels are led by Jock Landale, who averages 21.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He ranks first in the WCC and the nation having made 294 total field goals on the season. He also leads the team with a .643 shooting percentage, which also ranks first in the WCC and No. 7 overall in the nation. His 18 double-doubles on the season ranks first in the league and 10th in the nation.

St. Mary's went into Monday's game against UW leading both the WCC and the nation with a .517 field goal shooting percentage. They also rank among the nation's top-10 teams with a .409 three-point shooting percentage. They are defeating teams by an average margin of 13.4 points per game, which ranks No. 7 in the nation.

HISTORY WITH THE Gaels
Utah leads the all-time series 14-3 against St. Mary's - a series that dates back all the way to 1929. However ,the two teams have not met since the first round of the NIT back in 2014. The Gaels won that contest, 70-58, back on March 18, 2014, at McKeon Pavilion. The loss snapped Utah's nine-game winning streak that had dated back to 1959.

Utah is just 1-1 all-time when facing the Gaels in Moraga, Calif. In addition to the loss in the 2014 NIT, Utah defeated SMU in its only other meeting at McKeon Pavilion - a 41-35 victory back on Jan. 7, 2002.

UP NEXT
With a win over St. Mary's on Wednesday, Utah would advance to the NIT Final Four for the first time since the 1992 season. The 2018 NIT Final Four, scheduled for March 27 and 29, will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York.
