SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Runnin' Utes downed the Colorado Buffaloes, 78-69, in Pac-12 Conference play Sunday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. With the win, Utah moved to 9-8 overall and pushed their Pac-12 record to 3-2. Colorado dropped to 10-7 on the season, which includes a 1-4 mark in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah opened the contest knocking down three three-pointers and then following a Colorado mini 4-0 run, the Utes countered with a 12-0 run to push its lead to 21-7. Utah would later go on a 13-4 run to make it 34-11. Late in the first half, Utah pushed its lead up to 26 points before going into the locker room up 41-19.
Utah shot 45 percent from the field overall in the first half, while knocking down 61 percent (13-of-29) from three-point range (8-of-13). Meanwhile, Utah's defense clamped down and limited CU to just a 30 percent effort overall (9-of-30) and a 14 percent slate (1-of-7) beyond the arc. The Utes forced 11 Colorado turnovers in the first 20 minutes, leading to nine steals and 17 fast break points.
Utah opened the second half with an 8-2 run and pushed its lead to 28 points, up 49-21, but Colorado would cut the deficit down to 19 following a 19-10 run over the next six minutes, and later got within 15 points with less than five minutes to play. Following a Utah timeout under four minutes to play, Colorado's 5-0 run got the Buffs back within 10, down 70-60, but
Both Gach put the Utes back up by 13 following a three-pointer with 3:14 to play.
Both teams would trade buckets down the stretch and despite Colorado hitting a three-pointer with less than 35 seconds to play, Utah managed to clamp down late when it needed to and ease their way to the nine-point victory.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak
On how the Utes played in the first half …
"Yeah, I mean it's never going to be perfect but right up until the last four minutes of the first half it was really solid and we played with a tremendous mind of energy I thought defensively and we had a couple different zone concepts going, flying around, we had 18 deflections in one half which we have never had all season. You kind of open the game up with some of those turnovers and getting out in transition. We had a heck of a lot of momentum and then a little bit of disrespect for the game, and it's really not disrespect, but we went to where we took five bad shots in a row, everyone was kind of testing the waters, we had three chargers and we got away from what we did on defense to build us that lead and then we came in a half time and didn't have that feeling that we should have. Again, it just kind of rears its head that there is a lot of different parts to it but defensively first half was tremendous and I thought the first 10 minutes of the second half was solid and then they started hitting some shots and we kind of let our guard down. It was a terrific win for these guys, that's a good ball club and they are missing one of their warriors, McKinley Wright, and that's a break for our squad but we made progress. I don't think anybody walked out of the building like we set the world on fire but there was a lot positive things that happened and I think we can put our finger on when we don't have a good feeling and when things go a little haywire it's pretty explainable."
On Colorado's McKinley Wright's absence and if it changed the way they game planned …
"No, it was the same game plan regardless, maybe do some different things when he got the ball in the pick and roll, which they didn't run a whole lot of certainly in the first half, but we had a couple different plans, a plan A and a plan B, but we practiced all week as if he was playing. It's a tough feel, I really like their program and its never fun to see a kid go through that, he is a warrior and he is one of the key components for that team. They have a lot of good players though, so I think the first half was about as well as we could play and a lot of our offense was fueled by our defense and that's new for us. We don't score a lot of points off turnovers but I thought Both did a nice job gave us a lift and got hands on balls and I though our guys smelled a little bit of blood and that payed dividends."
