SALT LAKE CITY – On a night where Utah volleyball celebrated and took a look back at the last 30 years, the No. 18 Utah volleyball team took care of business on the court beating UCLA in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 28-26) in the Huntsman Center.
Â
With a bunch of alumni in the stands that came back to support Kim Turner having her jersey retired and
Beth Launiere for coaching in her 30th season, the current Utes made everyone proud pouncing on UCLA in the first two sets and then getting everyone to their feet to complete the sweep in extra points in the third.
Â
The Utes offense was on fire all night hitting .346 for the match led by
Dani Drews and
Kenzie Koerber. Drews had 17 kills hitting .412 and eight digs and Koerber was right behind her with 14 kills hitting .522 with 10 digs.
Â
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres almost set a career high in just three sets finishing the match with 47 assists.
Â
With the score tied at 7 in the first, Utah opened it up going on a 10-2 run to get a comfortable lead on the Bruins. From there, UCLA didn't make much headway as the Utes took the first set by seven points.
Â
Utah didn't slow down in the second set as they got up once again and continued to push their lead out to as much as nine when they closed the set out 25-16.
Â
During the break, Utah retired Kim Turner's jersey. She is the first volleyball player ever to have her jersey retired at Utah.
Â
After getting jumped on, UCLA wasn't going to make it easy on Utah in the third, but Utah wouldn't be denied. The Utes spoiled a set point at 25-24 and then finally cashed in on their third match point on a kill from Koerber.
Â
The win moves Utah to 12-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Pac-12.
Â
Phoebe Grace once again led the team defensively with 9.0 blocks of her own as Utah held UCLA to a .156 hitting percentage on the night.
Â
Utah will be back on the court in the Huntsman Center this Sunday, October 13 against USC at 12 p.m.
