FIRST PITCH
Utah begins its 2019 season at Texas State in their tournament playing three different teams in three days.
They begin with Texas State on Friday, February 15 at 5 p.m. MT followed by Missouri State on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then finishes the weekend out with Nevada at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
SERIES HISTORY
The Utes will face Texas State for the first time, but have played Missouri State and Nevada three times each.
Utah is a perfect 3-0 against Missouri State, but is 1-2 against Nevada.
SCHEDULE
The Utes non-conference schedule is very unique this season. The team will play 11 different opponents in its first 11 games at three different tournaments on the road.
After starting the season at Texas State, they will travel to San Diego and then East Carolina on the third weekend.
After traveling for three straight weekends, they will then host Niagara at home in the final weekend of non-conference play before hitting the road again for Pac-12 Conference action.
In all, Utah will play 18 of its first 21 games on the road this season.
After traveling a lot early in the season, the Utes will finish the season in the friendly confines of Smith's Ballpark playing 10 of its final 13 games at home.
MOELLER RETURNS TO LINEUP
After sitting out the 2018 season with Tommy John surgery,
Zack Moeller will return to the lineup as a catcher or designated hitter and is expected to be a boost not only for the offense, but also behind the plate.
In 2017, he started 47 games and played in 49. He hit .265 and had 30 RBI. He was second on the team with five home runs.
DUNN LOOKING FOR A BIG SEASON
Second Baseman
Oliver Dunn heads into 2019 with high hopes after having a great sophomore season. He was second on the team hitting .319 and in RBI with 31. Dunn also led the team stealing nine bases in 11 attempts.
Through his first two seasons, he has started in 104 of the 106 games he's seen action in and has a career batting average of .285.
After hitting over .300 in 2018, he was named honorable mention All-Pac 12.
ANDERSON ENTERS SENIOR SEASON
Chandler Anderson comes into his senior season with the most experience on the team playing in 120 games starting in 85 of those during his first three seasons.
The senior outfielder has a career batting average of .274.
He hit .243 his junior season and went eight-for-eight on stolen bases.
SUMMER BALL
Four Utes had success in summer leagues across the country.
Dunn helped lead Wareham Gatemen win the 2018 Cape Cod Baseball League Championship. He hit .230 in the league in 34 games with 10 RBI and scored 19 runs.
Anderson had a huge summer for the Corvallis Knights. He was named Second Team All-WCL after hitting .337 and batting in 34 RBI. Anderson led the team with 22 stolen bases and was second on the team scoring 40 runs. He stepped up in the playoffs batting .474 as the Knights won their third WCL title in a row. The outfielder hit .318 through 54 games in the regular season.
Outfielder
Dominic Foscalina played in the Alaska Baseball League for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. He hit .267 and had 20 RBI on 20 hits. He played in 24 games.
Shea Kramer also had some success playing for the Willmar Stingers in the Northwoods League and had 15 RBI on 20 hits in 35 games.
MLB DRAFT
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. left after his junior season when he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round.
The junior outfielder set a program record hitting .386 and having a 1.049 OPS. He had 78 hits on the season and scored 47 runs while also having 22 RBI.
In just three seasons, Keirsey had a decorated career in a Utah uniform. He was a three-time All-Pac-12 member as well as a three-time Pac-12 All-Defensive Team member. After his record-setting season in 2018, he was named ABCA/Rawlings West All-Region second team. In 2016, he was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and became the first Ute named to the Pac-12 Defensive Team.
Keirsey became the 11th Utah player drafted in the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft since 2008.
