SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team came away with two victories today against Northern Arizona, defeating the Lumberjacks 6-1 and 5-2. With these two wins the Utes are now 5-2 overall on the season.
"I'm happy with the result of two wins," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "But, I am not happy with the way that we played today. We have a lot to work on to prepare for two good teams next week with Iowa and Miami."
In their first match of the day against the Lumberjacks, the Utes were able to get an early advantage as they won the doubles point.
Azat Hankuliyev and
Dan Little started things off with a win on the No. 3 court, defeating Tim Handel and Ruben Montano with a score of 6-2. Then, to secure the doubles point,
Slava Shainyan and
David Micevski topped Thomas Fisher and Facundo Tumosa at the No. 2 position, 6-3.
In singles, Micesvki notched a quick win against Lucas Taylor at the No. 2 spot, notching a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Mathias Gavelin followed with a win of his own on the No. 6 court, defeating Ruben Montano with a score of 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 4 position, Benkaim knocked off Chris Steele with a 6-1, 6-3 win, followed by a victory from Woolley on court No. 5, defeating Facundo Tumosa in a competitive match, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. The final victory of the match came from Shainyan at the No. 3 spot, taking down Thomas Fisher in a tie-breaker set, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7.
In the Utes' second match of the day against Northern Arizona, they were also able to start the match off strong by winning the doubles point. Little and Hankuliyev notched another victory at the No. 3 position, beating out Lucas Taylor and Facundo Tumosa with a score of 6-2. Then, to seal the doubles point, Shainyan and Micevski chipped in a win of their own at the No. 2 spot against Thomas Fisher and Chris Steele, 6-4.
Moving on to singles with the advantage,
Dan Little was able to sweep Lucas Taylor on the No. 2 court with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Gavelin quickly followed with a sweep of his own at the No. 5 position against Facundo Tumosa, 6-0, 6-0. Then, at the No. 4 spot, Benkaim defeated Thomas Fisher 6-4, 6-4, followed by the final victory of the day from Shainyan in a competitive match against Chris Steele on the No. 3 court, coming out on top with the 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 victory.
The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action next week, as they will be on a road trip to Iowa City, Iowa. On February 9
th at 11 a.m. MT, they are set to match up against the University of Miami, followed by a match against Iowa on February 10
th at 10 a.m. MT.
