The start of baseball season is Friday, February 15 as
Bill Kinneberg enters his 16
th season as the head coach at Utah.
Â
It's time a take a look at the roster with the first position group being the outfield.
Utah returns three outfielders that have a lot of game experience, but they also lost their best player from 2018.
Â
"In the outfield, we lost Keirsey, but the three guys we will start the first weekend are three guys that played a lot last year with Anderson in left, Foscalina in center and Migueles in right," Kinneberg said. "All three of those guys played significant innings last year."
Â
Chandler Anderson has seen action in 120 games in his career and will be one of the leaders on the team. His junior season he started in 44 games and hit .243 with 21 RBI. He also had a great summer playing with the Corvallis Knights helping the team win a summer league championship by hitting .337 and having 34 RBI. Anderson led the team with 22 stolen bases and scored 40 runs.
Â
Dominic Foscalina will see action in center. He hit .247 a season ago and batted in 21 RBI while starting 39 games and playing in 42 games total. He is also a good defensive center fielder having three assists in 2018.
Â
Erick Migueles hit .261 in 2018 and had an .837 OPS. He had the fourth most hits on the team with 42 and led the team hitting seven home runs and 36 RBI.
Â
There are also a few other players that could get a chance in the outfield.
Â
"Those three are being pushed by two guys and with
Tyler Thompson coming off a mission, he can fill in center or left and once he gets going a little bit he has a chance to be a pesk at the plate," Kinneberg said. "
Isaac Deveaux redshirted last year, but has tremendous potential, we just have to get it out of him. The outfield I feel has a lot of candidates to play and I have some options out there."
Â
These guys as a group will look to replace DaShawn Keirsey. He was the Utes best player in 2018 setting a single-season record for batting average hitting .386. He also led the team scoring 47 runs with 78 hits and finished the season with a 1.049 OPS and .609 slugging percentage. Keirsey was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round.
Â
Kramer could shift from first base to the outfield if needed and the other outfielder on the team is
Ben Guess. He is a freshman from Arcadia, California.
