LOS ANGELES –
Both Gach scored a team-high 15 points and
Jayce Johnson registered his third double-double of the season with 13 points and game-high 13 rebounds to help lead the Utah Runnin' Utes to a 77-70 Pac-12 Conference road win against the USC Trojans Thursday night at the Galen Center.
Utah, who won its third consecutive road game dating back to a sweep over the Bay Area schools, improved to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in league play, while USC fell to 13-10 and 6-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gach scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half, while guiding the Utes to a 37-23 halftime lead.
Donnie Tillman came off the bench to knock down his first two three-pointers and closed the period with eight points. Utah shot 43.8 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range, while limiting USC to a 35.7 percent effort overall and a clip of just 20 percent from downtown.
Utah opened the game with a 7-0 run, USC countered with its own 7-0 run, and then the Utes bounced back with an 11-2 run. The Utes would later use an 11-3 run to go up by 20 points (37-17), but the Trojans closed out the half with a 6-0 run.
Three-pointers from
Parker Van Dyke and
Sedrick Barefield would push Utah's lead to 50-28, and then after going up 56-33, USC would proceed to go on an 11-2 run. Six of USC's first nine field goals came from beyond the arc, but Barefield would knock down another shot from downtown at the 7:27 mark to make it a 64-47 lead for the Utes.
A 10-0 USC run got the Trojans back within single digits, but another three from Van Dyke, followed by a pair of big-time free throws from Tillman and Both proved to be too much down the stretch. USC would outscore the Utes 9-2 over the final 23 seconds, but it wasn't enough and USC would drop its first home contest against a Pac-12 foe this season.
Utah snapped a two-game losing streak to USC and now leads the all-time series 23-19. The Utes are 8-9 when facing the Trojans in Los Angeles.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Gach, who got his first start since Dec. 29, led the way with 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting and a 5-of-6 effort from the free throw line. Johnson scored 13 points and tied a season-high with his 13 boards and Barefield scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half. Tillman would finish the game with 12 points giving Utah four players in double figures for the seventh time this season. Utah is now 6-1 in those games.
