Utes, Tomlinson Win Titles at Bandon Dunes Championship

BANDON, Ore. – Sophomore Blake Tomlinson and the Utah men's golf team came away with the individual and team titles on Tuesday at the Bandon Dunes Championship. Battling weather conditions in the final round, both Tomlinson and the team were able to pull ahead to clinch first place at the Bandon Dunes Resort.

Utah notched 11-over par (299) in the final round in windy conditions to earn the team title by six strokes with a combined score of 12-over par (294-283-299=876). This marks Utah's second team title this year after winning the Showdown in the Rockies back in September. The team title is head coach Garrett Clegg's third since being named head coach at Utah and his ninth overall.

Tomlinson shot 1-over par (73) in the final round to finish the event 4-under par (70-69-73=212) to earn his first career individual tournament title. Along with the win, Tomlinson also posted his season best 54-hole score of 212, a season-low round of 69 in the second round, and his first 54-hole finish of the season under par. Tomlinson also tied for the most birdies recorded in the event with 15 over the three rounds.

Also having a huge tournament for the Utes, sophomore Tristan Mandur tabbed his first career top-five finish after posting a 54-hole score of even par (72-69-75=216). Mandur shot 3-over par (75) in the final round to finish in a tie for third place.

"Today was an incredible day and the boys are fired up," said Clegg. "This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year. At Bandon, you battle the course and the elements. The wind and rain come with the territory and the weather was brutal today. The wind was howling and we got rain and hail here and there. Our guys got off to a rough start and had a lot a bogeys in the first seven to eight holes today. We turned it around and from there we had great pars and some great birdies. I am really proud of the way they battled today."

"Blake had a terrific tournament and finally got his first college win," continued Clegg. "It was not a matter of if he would win, but rather when it would be. Through six holes he was four over and was able to finish 1-over in the last 13 holes. Tristan had the best tournament of his career and all week long just did a great job out there. This is a huge confidence booster for these guys."

After coming off an incredible second round that broke the course record, junior Jordan Costello capped off his event as an individual by finishing in a tie for ninth place. Costello shot 5-over par (77) in the final round to finish the event with a combined score of 2-over par (77-64-77=218).

Senior Kyler Dunkle finished in a tie for 24th place on Tuesday following his final-round 2-over par (74). Dunkle posted a combined score of 7-over par (77-72-74=223).

"Kyler had a big comeback during his round today," said Clegg. "He was five over through eight holes and then came up with huge birdies for us. Jordan also finished in the top-10 and that was a great performance by him."

Freshman Axel Einarsson followed behind Dunkle and finished the event in a tie for 36th place with a combined score of 9-over par (75-73-77=225).

Rounding out Utah's five-man team, junior Mitchell Schow finished tied for 100th place with a combined score of 26-over par (90-75-77=242).

Denver (+18) finished in second place behind Utah, Ohio State (+20) and San Jose State (+20) finished tied for third place, while Fresno State (+22) placed fifth to round out the top-five teams at the Bandon Dunes Championship.

Utah finished the Bandon Dunes Championship second in the 17-team field with 159 total pars and third in the event with 46 total birdies. Tomlinson led the 107-player field on par-4 scoring average with a 3.93 (-2) average on par-4's, while ranking third on par-5's with a 4.50 (-6) scoring average. Mandur finished third in scoring average on par-3's with an 3.08 (+1) scoring average.

Utah will look to take its momentum into the NIT Championship next Monday and Tuesday, March 18-19, in Tucson, Ariz. The NIT Championship will be held at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.
