EUGENE, Ore. - Earlier today, the University of Utah men's tennis team was able to upset the 31st nationally ranked Oregon Ducks with a final score of 4-2. With this win, the Utes will now move to an overall record of 14-7, and improve to a 1-3 record in Pac-12 conference play.
"Incredibly proud of the boys today," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "So many times this season we have put ourselves in a great position to win, but failed to finish things out. Today we willed ourselves to a great win over a good Oregon team! Congrats to the guys, we are back in the mix of things!
Utah was able to get off to a great start against Oregon, as they were able to earn the doubles point.
Azat Hankuliyev and
Dan Little recorded the first victory of the day on court No. 1 against Riki Oshima and Charles Roberts, with a final score of 6-3.
Russell Benkaim and
Joe Woolley then secured the point at the No. 2 spot, knocking off Emmanuel Coste and Armando Soemarno with a score of 7-5, giving the Utes a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, Oregon rallied back with wins on courts 3 and 4 to go up 1-2, until
Mathias Gavelin defeated Ethan Young-Smith at the No. 5 position, tying things up 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. On court No. 6, Woolley then followed with a victory of his own, as he topped Even Fletcher in three sets with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. To then seal the victory for the Utes, No. 42
Dan Little defeated No. 125 Emmanuel Coste in a competitive three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to give Utah the upset over Oregon.
The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action next week for three home matches at the Eccles Tennis Center. Their first match will take place on Thursday, April 4th, as they will host the University of San Francisco, with competition set to start at 5 p.m. MT. That match will then be followed by two Pac-12 conference matches against 40th ranked Cal and 10th ranked Stanford. The Utes' match against Cal will take place on Saturday, April 6th, with competition set to start at 2 p.m. MT. Their last match of the week against Stanford is set for Sunday, April 7th, with competition starting at 2 p.m. MT.
