TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Utah Soccer suffered a second-straight setback to open the 2019 season with a 3-0 loss at Alabama.
"Today was a bit crazy with the weather," head coach
Rich Manning said. "Credit to Alabama for good aggressive attacking play. I thought we played with good energy, especially after the delay. We did not have the quality in our touches. This is something we can fix and will get back on it at training this week. While disappointed in the result, there were some valuable lessons for us moving forward."
The Crimson Tide took a lead just past the half hour when Brynn Martin blasted home a goal. Alabama dominated the first period that was marred by an hour-and-a-half weather delay.
Both teams tried to find their footing at the start of the second half as
Alexis Rushlow notched Utah's first shot of the game. The next 15 minutes were Utah's best of the game as it pushed for an equalizer.
Jessica Hixson and
Courtney Talbot missed tries and
Makayla Christensen forced a save.
Alabama got its second goal in the 74
th minute as Macy Clem tallied for the Crimson Tide and four minutes later, Casey Wertz converted a penalty kick for the final score.
Utah had another couple of chances in the waning moments of the game as
Ireland Dunn tested the Alabama goalkeeper and
Hailey Stodden had three tries, two of which were on frame.
