SALT LAKE CITY – Briley Knight capped off his great summer with the Corvallis Knights by being named the West Coast League's Most Valuable Player.
Â
Knight led the league in several offensive categories including on base percentage (.460), slugging percentage (.621), total bases (113) and extra base hits (29); and finished second in the league in hitting (.357) and RBIs (42) while blasting 8 home runs.
Â
"This summer was an amazing experience to say the least," Knight said. "I met a bunch of new guys that I'll love for the rest of my life. Performing well is always the goal, but the culture that we carried with us everyday is what made this summer unforgettable. This culture is like no other, and it's been around for years and years. Being honored as the MVP is humbling, and without great teammates, it simply wouldn't have happened."
Â
Knight wasn't the only Ute to have a great summer with the Corvallis Knights. Rising sophomore pitcher
David Watson was also honored, being named to the all-WCL second team. He tossed 47 innings, struck out 45 batters and posted a 5-1 mark with a 4.02 ERA.
Â
Utah had four players on the team that had a big impact with the Knights this summer as they were named Perfect Game's Summer Collegiate Team of the Year.
Â
This is the Knights first Summer Collegiate Team of the Year selection, and the first West Coast League team to be selected by Perfect Game as their Summer College Baseball Team of the Year. The Knights set a league wins record with 42, tied a franchise best mark for victories with 54 and won the club's 7th WCL title – it's fourth in a row this past summer.
Â
Now, Knight and his teammates are back on campus at Utah and are looking forward to starting team practice on Friday, September 20 for their upcoming season.
