OPENING TIP
The University of Utah men's basketball team wraps up the three-game road swing with a Saturday, Jan. 18, night tilt at Arizona State on the Pac-12 Network beginning at 7 p.m. (MT) with Roxy Bernstein and Bill Walton on the call.
Â
The Utes look to take the lead in the head-to-head series when playing in Tempe with the record tied at 13-13 heading into Saturday's 57th meeting all-time between the two programs.
Â
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
Utah has had the best of Arizona State as of late, winning seven of the last 10 meetings between the two programs. However, the Sun Devils and Utes have split the last four meetings with the road team winning each time.
Â
ASU enters the game 10-7 overall on the year and 1-3 in Pac-12 play after Thursday night's loss against No. 20/21 Colorado at home, 68-61. Junior Remy Martin paces the Sun Devils, averaging 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.9 steals. The 6-0 guard led the team in scoring in 13-of-17 games this season. Alonzo Verge Jr. is second on the team in scoring, checking in at 12.4 points per game with a 3.6 rebounding average. Romello White, the team's leading rebounder with 9.6 boards per game, is averaging 11.1 points for the Sun Devils and also shooting .663 from the field with a team-high 19 blocks. White has led the team in rebounding in 14-of-17 games this season – including five-straight games with 12-plus boards.
Â
Martin has elevated his play since the start of conference action, averaging 24.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.3 rebounds with a .371 (13-of-35) shooting clip from beyond the arc. Edwards and White are right at the cusp of averaging in double-figures for ASU, checking in at 9.8 points per game and 9.5 points per game, respectively.
Â
ASU opened the year with a couple win-streaks, first a three-game streak that saw the Sun Devils take down a good St. John's team 80-67. After a near 48-45 loss to Virginia, Arizona State reeled off five-straight wins – including a 79-59 victory over Georgia. Pac-12 play started with a 75-47 loss to in-state rival Arizona before sandwiching a road win at Oregon State (82-76) with a 79-69 loss to then No. 4 Oregon.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a relatively good shooting for the Utes (.439), they faced a hot-shooting #RV/RV Arizona team at home from long distance and fell to the Wildcats 93-77 Thursday night on the road. Things were neck-and-neck early on, as Utah trailed just 8-6 at the first media break before Arizona caught fire from 3-point range – specifically Max Hazzard, who had connected on 6-of-10.
Â
Utah outscored Arizona in the second-half 49-41, but the deficit created by the Wildcats from beyond the arc was too much to overcome in the loss.
Riley Battin posted a season-high 16 points for the Utes on 6-of-11 shooting and four rebounds while
Timmy Allen added 16 points of his own.
Rylan Jones chipped in with 11 points and five assists for the Utes while four other players notched four rebounds apiece.
Â
UP NEXT
Utah gets to return home to the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center where it'll play host to a pair of games against Washington (Jan. 23) and Washington State (Jan. 25) on the Pac-12 Network. Guy Haberman will have the call between the Utes and Huskies alongside Bill Walton while Don MacLean returns to SLC for the call with Haberman between Utah and Wazzu.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD
Utah hits the road again, this time for a Thursday/Sunday game in sunny Los Angeles, Calif. The Runnin' Utes first take on USC on Jan. 30 before battling UCLA on Sunday, Feb. 2, inside Pauley Pavilion. Both games are scheduled to air on FS1.
