STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – With wins from
Guro Jordheim and
Samuel Hendry as well as five skiers on the podium and nine skiers in the top 10, the Utah ski team dominated the Nordic races in freestyle competition at the Colorado Invitational. Utah increases its lead in the team standings at the meet, holding a 71-point lead over second-place Colorado with the classic races remaining on Sunday.
Hendry earned the win in his first collegiate race for the men in the 10-km race with
Maximilian Bie finishing second for his third career podium and
Luke Jager, also in his first career race, placed third to give Utah the podium sweep for a maximum 111 race points.
Logan Diekmann finished fourth with
Noel Keeffe eighth and
Ola Jordheim ninth.
"The conditions were really cold today but the team got out onto the race course early to test skis and find what was moving fast," Hendry said. "After a solid warm up I took off out of the gate at a fast pace. I then maintained my effort for about 7-km and then pushed as hard as I could up and over the last climb before gliding and sprinting into the finish. Fortunately I caught my teammate Max and skied almost the whole race with him. It's not often in an individual race that you get to work with someone and we really fed off of each other on the course to ski faster and faster."
Guro Jordheim has 13 career victories with this latest win.
Mariah Bredal earned her second career podium with a second-place finish, tying her career high.
Leah Lange finished fifth for the Utes for her third career top-five finish.
Karianne Moe finished 12
th. Utah earned 106 points in the race, which also led all teams.
"It's always a great day to be a Ute, especially today!"
Guro Jordheim said. "It was a great race and atmosphere. Considering that the wax situation is limited in a junior race like this, the coaches still managed to pull off some outstanding skis which shows how solid and professional of a support team we have. I think the results reflects our training culture and passion for success that our team had this fall. Steamboat has some very fun trails and I'm happy to be able to have skied the transitions and pace well."
Utah has 541 total points in the meet ahead of Colorado (470) with Denver (395.5) in third.
"WOW! What a way to kick off the collegiate race season!" head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick said. "The conditions were perfect today in Steamboat with blue skies and squeaky, cold snow this morning. Huge congrats to Sam and Luke for lighting up the tracks in their freshman debut. Great to have Max and Logan back in form after some sickness as well. The women's team really fed off the guys dominance. Guro and Mariah were very impressive today, skiing with a ton of confidence and Leah is starting to find her racing legs again too. Really proud of this team both on and off the tracks! Looking forward to see what they can do in the mass start tomorrow!"
"Awesome day today and maybe the best ever for a Utah Nordic team," added Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt. "The alpine team skied great at the CU Invite and put some pressure on the Nordics. The team really responded today and everyone had an awesome race."
The meet finishes on Sunday with the women's 10-km and men's 20-km classic races. The women start at 9 a.m. with the men and 10 a.m. Live results can be found at
