MINTURN, Colo. – The Utah ski team won its second-straight meet with a strong performance in the freestyle pursuit races on Sunday afternoon, taking the Denver Invitational by 80 points.
Guro Jordheim won her fourth-straight race and all eight skiers who competed finished in the top 10.
Utah scored 708 total points for the team win at the DU Invite, 391 in Nordic and 317 in alpine. It ranks fourth in RMISA history for points scored in a meet since the current scoring format began in 2014. Colorado was second with 628 points with Denver third (520).
The RMISA continues to chase Jordheim in the women's events, winning all four races this season. Her total pursuit time was 55 seconds better than her nearest competitor.
Mariah Bredal finished third for her second podium of the season and third of her career with
Leah Lange finishing fourth for her second top-five finish of the year.
Karianne Moe placed eighth for her third-straight top-10 finish.
"Today was a really fun college ski race," Bredal said. "I hadn't done a pursuit race in college before so it was cool to do something a little different than usual this weekend. For my race, there was a good group of girls I caught up to and stuck with on the first lap. I thought I would just try to hang onto them until the end but on the second lap I started to feel good and had the confidence to break away a little and then managed to ski the last lap with Leah, which was pretty helpful for both of us I think! Both of us had good sprints to the end. The skis were great as well and the sun was out so it was a day that a lot of things just came together."
For the men, Jager had the second-best overall 10-km freestyle time to finish with the second-best total pursuit time, finishing second for the second-straight day. He has three total podiums this year.
Logan Diekmann finished fifth for his third top-five finish of the year.
Bjørn Riksaasen finished a season-high eighth for his 13
th career top-10 finish.
Ola Jordheim earns his fourth-straight top-10 finish of the year with a ninth place run.
The Utes were without
Noel Keeffe, who spent the weekend making his first World Cup start at Oberstdorf, Germany, and
Samuel Hendry, while
Maximilian Bie and
Julia Richter did not race today.
"Minturn has treated us well!" head Nordic coach
Miles Havlick said. "Our depth really shined through this weekend as everyone really stepped up to fill the void of their missing teammates. Both races today were very exciting with the pursuit format but the women's race really capped off the day with Guro dominant once again followed closely by Mariah and Leah sprinting to the line with two strong CU women. Looking forward to the off weekend to rebuild before the season rolls on in Aspen!"
"This team showed once again how strong they are," Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "Even without Max, Noel, Sam, and Julia, everyone managed to stay focused and finish in the top 10. The women were taking the podium for most of the race until they were caught by a couple of CU girls near the end. Top racing for the entire team today. Now time for some rest, school, and training before the Nordic qualifier in Aspen."
Both the alpine and Nordic teams are off collegiate competition next weekend. The next college races up are a pair of Nordic RMISA qualifiers in Aspen, including competing at the Owl Creek Chase, from Feb. 8-9. Alpine will compete in Nor-Ams in Canada from Feb. 3-8, returning to collegiate competition on Feb. 22.
