SAN FRANCISCO –
Rylan Jones was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Monday the league announced after back-to-back strong performances for the University of Utah men's basketball team down the stretch last week. This is the first freshman of the week honor for Jones and Utah since the award was added this season.
Â
The Holladay, Utah, product had clutch performances against Washington and Washington State to help Utah end a four-game skid. In those two games, the freshman averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.5 steals. Of his 37 total points he scored last week, 26 of it came late in the second half. The sweep of both UW and WSU was the sixth time the Utes have swept the Washington schools at home in eight attempts – Utah didn't host the Washington schools in 2012-13.
Â
Jones was as clutch as they come in the first game against the Huskies, scoring all 13 of his points in the final 5:25 minutes of action – nine of which came at the free-throw line. In addition, his final free throw of the game gave Utah the go-ahead 67-66 lead with 14.1 seconds left on the clock. Jones accounted for 13 of the team's final 22 points in the final 5:25 minutes of play and also dished out a nine assist that game, the second most in a single-game in his young career, to go with seven rebounds.
Â
Two days later, Jones erupted in the second half against Washington State scoring 18 points of his 24 points. The young point guard went 6-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and 4-of-4 from the line in the second half. Jones took over the game for Utah in the final 9:24 minutes of play, scoring 13 of the team's 20 points while playing the entire second frame. He finished the game with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Â
At weekend's end, Jones moved into a tie for fifth in the freshman record books with 35 made threes on the year. It ties him with
Jordan Loveridge (2012-13) and Keith Van Horn (1993-94) with plenty of room to move up the ladder.
Â
Jones and the Utes look to add onto that win-streak as they head to USC (Jan. 30) and UCLA (Feb. 2) this week. Both games are scheduled to air on FS1.
