SALT LAKE CITY – Utah baseball begins its 2020 season on Friday, February 14 at UC Davis.
Â
Focusing on the outfield, Utah lost two of its three starters in 2019, but returns
Briley Knight, who got better and better his freshman season and had a huge summer in the West Coast League playing for the Corvallis Knights.
Â
"
Briley Knight has established himself as one of the better players on our team," head coach
Bill Kinneberg said. "He'll be playing center field hopefully almost every day and at the top of the lineup either first or second for us."
Â
Knight was named the West Coast League MVP after leading the league in on-base percentage (.460), slugging percentage (.621), total bases (113) and extra base hits (29). He finished second in the league in hitting .357 and RBI with 42 while knocking eight homers.
"Briley feels like he's going to be our
Oliver Dunn leading off or hitting second and be the catalyst like Oliver was," Kinneberg said. "That's what I see in Briley."
Â
With Knight holding the center field spot down, the two corner outfield spots are still up in the air. Sophomore
Tyler Thompson and redshirt sophomore
Isaac Deveaux hold the early edge after fall practice.
Â
Thompson saw limited action a season ago playing in 19 games, but only starting three. The left fielder hit .158 with three RBI.
Â
Deveaux started in 17 games and saw action in 23 of them. He hit .227 with eight RBI. He also scored 15 runs. The right fielder had three multi-hit games and was perfect against Arizona going 3-3.
Â
"Deveaux is starting to develop into the player we know he can be because he's finally healthy," Kinneberg said. "We feel like he's got a chance to really be an offensive threat for us."
Â
Shea Kramer is another player that could see some time in the outfielder. Seeing the majority of his time at first base in 2019, Kramer can play first, third or either corner outfield spot making him the ultimate utility player.
Â
Kramer hit .279 after playing in 44 games with 40 starts in 2019 and had 22 RBI.
Â
The three players in a backup role in the outfield right now are
Vinny Zavolta,
Austin Youngblood and
Jake Connelly.
Â
Utah will spend its next two weekends down in St. George before starting its season at UC Davis on Friday, February 14.
