SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah men's basketball center
Branden Carlson was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after a big weekend on both ends of the floor at home averaging 10.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks while leading the Utes to a sweep of the Bay Area schools.
Â
This is Carlson's first honor and the second freshman of the week accolade for Utah this season. The Utes now join Arizona, USC and Washington as the only schools to win multiple freshman of the week honors.
Rylan Jones earned the honor for Utah two weeks prior on Jan. 27.
Â
The South Jordan, Utah, product had an incredible game against then #RV/RV Stanford last Thursday and registered 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks in the overtime victory. In addition to recording his first-career double-double, Carlson's eight blocks that game changed the game completely and tied him with Jason Washburn (vs. Oregon State on Feb. 4, 2012) for the third-most blocks in a single-game at Utah.
Â
Carlson is only the fourth freshman this season to record eight blocks in a single-game at the Division I level, joining Joshua Morgan (Long Beach State), Onyeka Okongwu (USC) and Eric Rustin (UT Martin). He is also just the 24th player this season to record eight or more blocks in a single game.
Â
Utah heads to the Pacific Northwest this week for a pair of critical road games against the Oregon schools as it looks to grab its first victory away from home in Pac-12 play.
