CORVALLIS, Ore. – A tough night offensively for the University of Utah men's basketball team saw it drop a 70-51 decision Thursday night to Oregon State inside Gill Coliseum.
Branden Carlson got the Utes going to start the game, scoring the first five points behind a straight away triple. However, three separate scoring droughts afterwards doomed Utah and saw Oregon State finish the final 11:01 minutes of the first half on a 24-10 run – which set the Utes back 35-19 heading into the break.
The second half saw the Utah (14-10, 5-7 Pac-12) offense pick up the pace and found the bottom of the basket more often, knocking down 45.8-percent of its shots (11-of-24) compared to the .296 shooting clip (8-of-27) in the first half.
However, 14 Ute turnovers saw Oregon State (15-9, 5-7 Pac-12) turn it into an 18-8 scoring edge. Kylor Kelley led the Beavers in the game with 14 of his 16 points coming in the paint while three other teammates also reached double-figures in the win over Utah.
Carlson paced the Utes offensively with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and eight rebounds. In his first game back in over two weeks,
Both Gach scored eight points.

Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak…
On the message at halftime…
"I thought, you know, we weren't aggressive, we weren't getting feet in the paint. There were a lot of times that we didn't finish strong enough around the rim when we finally did get there. You know those golden opportunities, point blank range and then free-throw line. I just challenged our guys that we had to have a little bit more… players make plays. That's what I talked about. It's not what we call or whether they're in man, zone or have court trap or anything like that. Our players need to step up and make plays for each other and when we did that, I thought it was pretty good. We got feet in the paint, draw and kick, and kept them moving and the second half was far better than the first half."
UP NEXT
The Utes will get an extra day of rest once again on the road before they head down to Eugene for a 7 p.m. (MT) contest against No. 17/18 Oregon on Sunday, Feb. 16, on FS1. Aaron Goldsmith will have the call between the Utes and Ducks while Casey Jacobsen serves as the analyst.
