ARLINGTON, Texas – The Utah baseball team dropped its opening game at UT Arlington 6-0 on Friday afternoon.
Justin Kelly got the start and gave up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out a career high five batters in 6.1 innings pitched.
At the plate,
Jayden Kiernan reached base four times with one hit and three walks.
Arlington got on the board in the first with a solo home run, but after that Kelly held the Mavs scoreless until the sixth.
Utah had runners on base in seven of the nine innings and loaded the bases in the third inning, but couldn't get any runners across the plate. The Utes totaled five hits and drew six walks in the game giving them 11 base runners on the afternoon.
Arlington ended up getting some breathing room on Utah scoring two runs in the sixth and then added three more in the seventh to go up 6-0.
Trey Clarkson came in for Kelly and finished the game pitching the final 1.2 innings.
Briley Knight was back in the lineup and went 1-4 with a double and had one walk.
Utah will try and bounce back and win the second game against UT Arlington on Saturday, February 29 with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
