Redshirt sophomore
Justin Kelly returns to the team after missing the 2019 season due to injury. Below, Kelly talks about being back with the team.
Â
How great is it to be back with the team?
Incredibly excited. It took a little longer to come back from Tommy John than I thought it would. I struggled a little bit early on with it, but I have great teammates, great coaches and training staff that helped me get back to where I was before. It's awesome to be back.
Â
How did you grow in the year sitting out?
To have the game you love taken away from you for a little over a year in my case, it kind of puts you in the backseat and you're no longer in the driver's seat anymore. I grew a lot over that time. Now, I'm learning how to pitch a little better with Coach Henderson here and have a completely different perspective after sitting out.
Â
How has it been learning from Coach Henderson?
It's awesome. He's got tons of experience being the head coach at Kentucky and Mississippi State. He's been a ton of winning programs and won wherever he's been. He expects to win here and we plan to get on that wagon with him. He comes with a ton of experience and we're excited to learn everything we can from him.
Â
What's your mindset coming into the year?
Obviously, we want to turn the ship around a little bit after the last couple of years and turn a corner. We've been working hard and everyone is excited to get out to UC Davis to start the season.
Â
What's your favorite part about baseball?
The relationships. Meeting these guys. I was lucky enough to play in Portland this summer and met some crazy personalities and have gotten to go places I probably never would've gone to without baseball. Definitely the relationships and the memories you build with these guys, because without this sport none of us would be connected the way we are.
