ASPEN, Colo. – Leah Lange and
Maximilian Bie both finished second to lead the Utah ski team at the Owl Creek Chase RMISA qualifier in Aspen on Sunday morning.
RMISA qualifiers do not count towards any team scoring and are used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season.
Lange earned her third podium finish of the year in the 21-km classic race and she has four career podium finishes. All five women finished in the top 10.
Guro Jordheim finished fourth while
Mariah Bredal finished fifth for her fourth top-five finish of the season.
Karianne Moe earned her fifth-straight top-10 finish with an eighth-place run while
Julia Richter finished 10
th.
"Today was really fun to ski a point-to-point. We rarely do this so it's a cool change," Lange said.
"However, today was really tough, I think everyone out there had really slick skis. It was just a grind. But Guro helped pull me a lot and the coaches and support was so great that I managed to ski a strong last 5-k. into second. It was also neat starting right behind all the boys and catching some of them."
Bie earned his second podium of the season, tying his career-best finish. He has four career podium finishes.
Logan Diekmann finished eighth and
Ola Jordheim was ninth, both have been in the top 10 in every race this year.
Bjørn Riksaasen finished 12
th while
Noel Keeffe finished 13
th.
"A cool and brutal day to be a Nordic skier," Bie said. "The race was a point-to-point and the pace was high from the first meter. Magnus [Boee of CU], Espen [Persen of UAA] and I got a gap early. They double poled and I had kick, so the hills was good for me but I had to work really hard in the easier sections. Halfway through I was fried, and couldn't keep up. I got caught by the group behind and thought that was it for me. Somehow I managed to pull myself together the last few kilometers, got up to the pack just before the finish and felt strong on the finishing stretch! That's the hardest and longest 20-km I have ever done, but happy how it turned out. Also, great team effort as always! Got to thank the coaches for great skis and Ben [Scheu, trainer] for treatments and helping us out."
"Snowy day and tough conditions," Director of Skiing
Fredrik Landstedt said. "Great skiing by Max to win the sprint for second. As usual the women skied super well and Leah skied herself up to second in the last kilometer. Overall the team is pretty tired right now and we are looking forward to being at home next weekend!"
Next up for the Utes is a return to Utah for the Nordic portion of the Utah Invitational, beginning Friday, Feb. 14 with the 5-km and 10-km freestyle races, followed by the 10-km classic races on Saturday, Feb. 15. Both races will be held at Soldier Hollow.
