SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team fell in a match against in-state rival Brigham Young Saturday afternoon with a final score of 0-4. Utah suffered its first loss at the Eccles Tennis Center of the season and are now 12-5 overall in spring play.
Â
Playing outdoors for the first time in Salt Lake City, the Utes and Cougars went back-and-forth throughout the doubles matches to open the contest. With all three courts tied 4-4 at one point, the Utes couldn't pull ahead and saw BYU pick up wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2 to seal the doubles point.Â
Azat Hankuliyev and
Slava Shainyan fell 6-4 on court two against Sam Tullis and Ben Gajardo, while Utah's No. 37-ranked duo of
Randy Cory and
Russell Benkaim fell at the No. 1 position to Mateo Vereau and Matheus Leite, 6-4.Â
Â
Singles was no different than doubles and all matches were very tight early. At the No. 6 position, Thayne faced off against Matheus Leite and came up short 6-3, 6-3 for BYU's second point of the dual. The Cougars then added another victory shortly after with a win at the No. 4 spot, as Gavelin fell 6-3, 6-4 against Sam Tullis. BYU then ended the match at the No. 3 spot, clinching the dual 4-0, as Benkaim fell 6-3, 7-5, in a competitive match against Jack Barnett.Â
