SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah men's basketball sophomore
Both Gach earned Pac-12 Player of the Week after his stellar play last weekend against Colorado, giving Utah the thrilling 74-72 win in overtime inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Â
This is the first weekly award for Gach in his young career and third player of the week honor for Utah. The three accolades for Utah is only second to Oregon, who had four this season. It is also just the second time since joining the league that Utah has had two different players earn player of the week honors and first since 2013-14 (
Jordan Loveridge, Delon Wright).
Â
Gach, who was slowly breaking out of his shooting slump last weekend, exploded for a career-high 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting with five rebounds, four assists and two steals against Colorado. The Austin, Minn., native scored 16 of the team's 33 points in the first half against Colorado to keep the Utes within striking distance before finding the bottom of the basket in a few critical moments – including the turnaround jumper that sent the game into overtime.
Â
The 6-6 guard then went on to score five of Utah's 10 points in the extra period, three of which came at the free throw line to give the Utes the win after drawing a foul beyond the arc with 0.6 seconds remaining.
Â
Gach and the Utes now turn their focus towards Oregon State, who they'll open the Pac-12 Tournament with on Wednesday, March 11, at 1 p.m. (MT) on the Pac-12 Networks.
