SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's tennis program has announced
Slava Shainyan will return for another season and stay in Salt Lake City for an additional year. Shainyan led the Utes with a team-high 13 dual wins this season.
"We were thrilled when we found out that current seniors were given the opportunity to play an additional season should they choose to do so," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "Slava was our Team MVP this year after a terrific season and has been a crucial part to our program the last four years. He will bring much needed experience and leadership to the team next season. We are ecstatic to have him return."
A four-year starter, Shainyan finished his shortened senior season with a team-best 13-2 record, which included a 9-1 slate in the No. 3 position and went 2-0 on court two. Shainyan earned a key win against No. 23 Iowa's Joe Tyler 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the upset over the top-25 team for Utah. He totaled a 9-1 record against Mountain Region opponents this season.
Other key wins for Shainyan came against opponents from East Tennessee State, Loyola Marymount and Purdue. He closed out the shortened season on a six-match win streak to lead the Utes. The Moscow, Russia native also posted a 10-5 record in doubles play with fellow senior
Azat Hankuliyev.
As a junior, Shainyan finished with 11 dual wins last spring in singles play and 10 doubles wins. He also finished the 2019 season ranked No. 16 in the Mountain Region. Highlighting his junior year, Shainyan knocked off No. 58 Bojan Jankulovski from Miami in a three-set match to clinch the team victory. He played primarily in the No. 3 spot in singles and top spot for doubles. A consistent contributor, Shainyan posted 15 singles wins in his freshman campaign and seven doubles wins his sophomore year.
Shainyan has earned back-to-back ITA Scholar Athlete selections, as well as consecutive first-team Pac-12 All-Academic honors majoring in Business Management.
