SALT LAKE CITY – With the Major League Baseball beginning a new season, Utah baseball will be represented by C.J. Cron on the Detroit Tigers.
Â
Cron is entering his seventh season in the majors after the Tigers signed him as a free agent in December after a season in which he had a .253 batting average with 24 doubles, 25 home runs and a career-high 78 RBIs with the Minnesota Twins.
Â
This is his fourth team after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Angels and then playing a season with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Twins.
Â
Cron had a great career at Utah becoming the first-ever first-round draftee when he was selected 17th overall in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels. He was a two-time first-team All-American (2010 and 2011) and two-time NCBWA District VIII Player of the Year. Cron was also named MWC Player of the Year twice.
Â
Utah has one other former student-athlete with a chance to land in the majors this season with
Andre Jackson on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Â
Jackson was drafted in the 12
th round of the 2017 draft and has worked his way up in the organization. He was a non-roster invite to spring training for this season and will continue to keep practicing to keep the players on the 40-man roster sharp as well as staying ready in case he gets called up.
 Â
In two seasons in the minors so far, he holds a 3.45 ERA in 43 appearances with 42 games started.
Â
At Utah, Jackson played in the outfield while making 12 career appearances on the mound.
