SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team has begun individual workouts this fall and has welcomed 12 newcomers to the roster.
Â
With a mix of experienced graduate transfers to incoming freshmen, the Utes filled needs on their roster.
Â
Two graduate transfers lead the way as Brayson Hurdsman comes in from Houston and Jaylon McLaughlin transferred in from Nevada.
Â
Hurdsman had over 60 appearances at Houston starting and in relief. His junior season he held a 3.35 ERA in 21 appearances. In 40.1 innings pitched, he had 34 strikeouts and only 13 walks. Hurdsman made 19 appearances his sophomore season and 18 appearances his freshman season, so he will bring plenty of experience to the Utes pitching staff.
Â
McLaughlin broke out in 2019 for the Nevada Wolfpack hitting .339 and landing on the All-Mountain West Team. His 25 stolen bases on the year ranked as the sixth-most in a single season by a Nevada player and he set a career-highs with 48 games played, 45 starts, 61 hits, eight doubles, three homers, and 24 RBI.
Â
Among the freshmen newcomers, RHP Ben Kibbe comes in after earning SCAC West MVP honors his junior season, when he posted a 7-1 record with a 0.93 ERA and struck out 87 batters in 45 innings.
Â
Other freshmen pitchers joining the team are Gage Webster and LHP Derek Soffe from South Jordan, Utah.
Â
On the infield, the team has added Kai Roberts and Zane Skansi. Roberts is from Lehi, Utah and his dad was the hitting coach at BYU. Skansi is from Gig Harbor, Washington.
Â
Dakota Duffalo and Hank Morley are incoming freshmen outfielders. Duffalo comes to Salt Lake City from Mesa, Arizona and Morley is from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Â
Owen Mortenson comes in and is able to play catcher or pitch on the mound. He hit .315 his first year starting on varsity, and also helped his team win the 2018 State Championship.
Â
To go along with these graduate transfers and incoming freshmen, Matthew Sox transfers in from Whitman College where he played two seasons. Caleb Manuel transferred in from Olympic Junior College and is originally from Taylorsville, Utah.
Â
The Utes are currently in individuals and will move into team practice in September.
