Branden Carlson will represent the Runnin' Utes this year at Pac-12 Men's Basketball Media Day in San Francisco after a hiatus in 2020 this Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Live coverage of media day with hosts Guy Haberman, Don MacLean and Jordan Kent at the Pac-12 Networks studios located in the heart of the SOMA District begins at 11 a.m. (MT) with opening remarks from Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff and Deputy Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich on Pac-12 Networks and Pac-12 Insider.

- Each team will be featured for 15 minutes with all in studio shows airing on Pac-12 Networks while all press conferences from the podium will air on Pac-12 Insider
- Coach Smith, Battin and Carlson will be featured in studio beginning at 1:30 p.m. (MT) before the trio takes questions on the podium at 3:50 p.m. (MT)

SMITH ERA BEGINS ON THE HILL

Mark Harlan tabbed
Craig Smith as the 16th head coach of the Runnin' Utes on March 27, 2021 after a successful three seasons at Utah State. Smith compiled a record of 74-24 at Utah State and has a career record of 225-108 (.676) in 10 years as a collegiate head coach. He led the Aggies to the 2021 NCAA tournament as the Mountain West's second-place finisher with a 20-9 record, posting a 20-win season for the third year in a row.

In 25 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 10 as a head coach, Smith has been to postseason play 13 times, while winning four regular season and four postseason conference championships. He has earned four conference coach of the year awards (2006, 2007, 2017, 2019) in three different leagues. He was also named NAIA II National Coach of the Year Award in 2007, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 12 Coach of the Year Award in 2017 and NABC District 17 Coach of the Year and USBWA District VIII Coach of the Year in 2019.

Riley Battin enters his senior year at the U and is just 1-of-2 returning players for the Runnin' Utes that averaged more than six minutes last season. The other is
Branden Carlson, who joins Battin in San Francisco for Pac-12 Men's Basketball Media Day. The Westlake Village, Calif., product averaged 6.6 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Utes last season off the bench with nine starts. The 6-9 forward is a two-time Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll recipient and named to the NABC Honors Court for the 2020-21 season.

NOTES ON CARLSON
Branden Carlson begins his junior campaign in 2021-22 after average 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds with a team-high 42 blocks last season. The South Jordan, Utah, native was third on the team in scoring, both overall and in Pac-12 play (9.5 ppg). In addition, he was second on the team in shooting percentage (.551) and sixth among Pac-12 players while his 1.68 blocks per game was second best in the league. The 7-0 center began to get in the groove of things in the second half of conference play, reaching double-figures in 12 of his last 16 games.
