STANFORD – The Utah baseball team dropped the series finale at Stanford 4-1 on Sunday, March 21.
The Utes tied it up in the fourth inning, but couldn't get anymore runs across the plate. The Cardinal took the lead back in the fifth and held onto it from there.
Utah matched Stanford with seven hits in the game with
Jayden Kiernan going 2-4.
Shea Kramer had the team's RBI in the fourth.
David Watson got the start and pitched 5.0 strong innings. He gave up two earned runs on four hits.
Stanford got on the board first scoring in the third inning to go up 1-0. They got a leadoff double that eventually came around to score, but Utah limited them after that.
The Utes didn't let Stanford have a lead for long as they struck back in the next half inning.
Vinny Zavolta got the inning started with Utah's second double of the afternoon. After advancing to third from a fly ball, Kramer put the ball in play allowing Zavolta to come home and tie the score.
The Cardinal scored more runs in the fifth and sixth to push their lead to 3-1. They added a fourth run in the eighth to push their lead to three.
After the fourth inning, the Stanford pitchers only allowed one more Utah base runner the rest of the game.
Matthew Sox pitched 2.0 innings and only allowed one hit.
Zac McCleve pitched the final inning and gave up one run on two hits. Watson took the loss on the day falling to 0-3 on the season.
Utah will now return home with four straight games in Smith's Ballpark starting with Dixie State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
