Junior linebacker had a career-high 12 tackles in win over Weber State
SAN FRANCISCO – University of Utah junior linebacker Devin Lloyd has been named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

Lloyd set a single-game career high with 12 tackles, including eight in the first half, in last Thursday's season-opening win over Weber State at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The preseason All-American's 12 tackles stand tied for fifth-most in an FBS game and most by a Pac-12 player this season. It was also Lloyd's fifth career game with double-digit tackles and the most by a Ute since 2019.

Lloyd's night vs. Weber State included 2.0 TFLs for 10 yards, an eight-yard sack, a forced fumble and a second-quarter interception, his second as a Ute. The eventual pick was tipped around in the air before landing in Lloyd's hands and ultimately left Utah a short field for a three-play touchdown drive, giving the Utes a 19-7 lead in the game.

The lockdown effort from Lloyd and the entire Utah defense forced Weber State three-and-out on its first two drives, and punts on its first three. WSU did not cross the 50-yard line until late in the second quarter, and did not tally its first scoring drive until the 10:31 mark of the third period.

The native of Chula Vista, Calif., ranks second in the Pac-12 in total tackles for loss, and owns nine straight games with at least one TFL dating back to Nov. 30, 2019.

Utah is now locked into preparation for a Sat., Sept. 11 game at BYU, with opening kickoff slated for 8:15 p.m. MT on ESPN.
