SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
Like many teams around the Pac-12 and country alike, Arizona State has had to deal with COVID-19 and have had three games postponed (at USC, at UCLA, Arizona) on top of a canceled game (Florida A&M). The Sun Devils are coming off a recent pause where they had to push back their game vs. in-state rival Arizona last week. Since Dec. 19, ASU has only played 3 games – a 66-65 loss to San Francisco at home, a 74-50 loss on the road to California and Saturday's loss to Colorado (75-57).
Â
Arizona State enters the game on Monday 5-9 overall and 1-3 in Pac-12 play with losses in its last 3 games. The Sun Devils are just 3-4 this season on their home floor, picking up wins over Portland, North Florida and Grand Canyon with losses to UC Riverside (buzzer beater), Washington State, San Francisco and Colorado. In those seven games, opponents have shot .348 from beyond the arc (9.3 3FGM per game).
Â
DJ Horne leads the team with 13.4 points per game to go with his 2.9 rebounding average and .398 shooting clip from 3-point range. Kimani Lawrence is next on the team averaging 10.4 points with team-highs in rebounds (7.5 rpg) and shooting-percentage (.500). Jay Heath is nearly in the double-digits category averaging 9.9 points and 3.7 rebounds. Marreon Jackson leads the team with 52 assists to go with his 7.3 points average while his 15 steals on the year is tied for second-most with Lawrence.
Â
PAC-12 WOES
Utah has now lost five-straight games in Pac-12 play with losses to Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State and #6/6 Arizona. The last time the Utes had a five-game losing streak was in 2012-13 in a similar stretch they are on now with losses at ASU, at #3 Arizona, UCLA, USC and at Washington State.
Â
The last time Utah had lost six or more consecutive games was during the 2011-12 campaign where it had two stretches of eight-straight losses. Once during the non-conference season and a second during league play.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes went toe-to-toe with #6/6 Arizona State for 2/3 of the game before the Wildcats showed why they were ranked in the top-10 and went on a 21-0 run that the Utes were able to recover from and lost 82-64. The Runnin' Utes kept pace with UA and was within one possession at the 11:38 media break before Arizona went on its run.
Â
Both Gach led the team 12 points off the bench while
Lahat Thioune and
Dusan Mahorcic each added a dozen points for Utah.
Riley Battin paced Utah on the glass with eight boards to go with four points while
Gabe Madsen chipped in with eight points.
