EUGENE, Ore. – Despite
Madelyn Robinson's career-high 28 kills Friday night, Utah Volleyball fell in four sets to the No. 20-ranked Oregon Ducks at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore. Robinson upped her previous career high by two kills this evening to collect her fourth match of 20 or more kills this season.
Robinson posted six kills in each of the first two sets with just two hitting errors, while she posted seven kills in the third set and a whopping nine kills in the final frame. She finished the match with a .311 hitting percentage.
Oregon put the pressure on Utah early in the opening set. The Utes struggled to find rhythm on serve receive and as a result, could not find a groove offensively either. Oregon built a 9-4 lead before Utah would use its first timeout, but a 7-1 run later on would set Utah back 17-7, forcing the Utes to burn their final timeout of the frame.
Madelyn Robinson ended the scoring drought and began what led on to be a 7-2 run for the Utes, which cut the score to just 19-14. Three consecutive points from the Ducks pushed the Utes behind eight points to maintain the large lead and eventually take a 25-17 victory in the first set.
Utah limited the large run from Oregon in the second set and instead went back and forth from start to finish as the frame saw 11 tied scores. The Utes took a 7-6 lead after scoring four of five points early on, and from there the two teams had little separation. Trailing 17-15, Utah managed to cut the lead to one point on four occasions before Oregon took its largest lead of the set at 22-19. Out of a Utah timeout, Robinson recorded another kill for the Utes, but three consecutive points from the Ducks would win the set 25-20.
In the third set, Utah took advantage of a 7-2 run to pull ahead 14-12 after playing from behind. Oregon slowly chipped away at the lead and Utah saw its lead end when the Ducks tied the frame 18-18.
Abby Karich tipped right over the block for a kill to push Utah back ahead, which started a 5-1 run for the Utes. Leading 23-19, Utah gave up four points in a row to Oregon to find itself tied once again. Although a Duck attack error pushed the Utes to set point, Utah couldn't convert as Oregon's Nuneviller collected a kill. The Utes leaned on Robinson as they had all night for a kill and an attack error from the Ducks would get Utah on the board with a 26-24 win.
Utah led 7-5 to begin the fourth set, but a 5-0 run from Oregon forced Utah to play from behind. Utah cut the Duck lead to just 13-12 later on after a kill from
KJ Burgess, but another run would doom the Utes as Oregon put together a 6-1 run to lead 19-13. Later trailing 22-15, the Utes tried rallying late with a 5-1 run of their own, but the damage had been done as the Ducks eventually went on to record a kill and match-ending block to win the set 25-20 and match 3-1.
Three Utes posted double-digit digs as
Emily Smith and
Vanessa Ramirez led the way with 14 digs each, and
Kamry Bailey added 10 digs. Smith posted her 10th double double of the year with 25 assists as well.
Viktoria Wahlgren also chipped in at setter with 10 assists. Burgess collected a team-high four blocks, along with five kills. Karich also posted five kills to add to the offense behind Robinson's career night.
Utah will close out the road trip this Sunday, Oct. 23, against Oregon State. The Utes and Beavers are set to play at 1 p.m. MT in Gill Coliseum.
