SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah right-hander pitcher and redshirt senior
Matthew Sox has been selected as a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the organization announced on Monday.
Â
In addition, Sox was selected by the Golden Spikes Award as one of four nominees for the National Performance of the Week. Fans can vote for Sox
on Twitter using this link until Tuesday morning.
Â
Last Friday (Feb. 25), the native of La Cañada, California was two outs away from a no-hitter in an eventual win over Fresno State, before a bloop single broke up the bid in the ninth inning. No other Pac-12 pitcher took a no-hitter into the ninth inning this past weekend.
Â
Sox had six strikeouts and just two walks in his incredible start. He was charged with one run—the Fresno State player who logged the single in the ninth. He did not allow a baserunner from the fifth inning until the bloop in the ninth.
Â
For his performance, D1Baseball.com named Sox the Pitcher of the Day for Feb. 25.
Â
Utah continues its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, March 1 with a road tilt at UNLV. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. MT at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
