SALT LAKE CITY – An eight-run second inning sparked the Utes early and the pitching staff did not walk a batter all night, as Utah kicked off a six-game home stand with an 18-2 victory over Northern Colorado on Tuesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
TJ Clarkson had two homers and six RBI, including Clarkson's first career grand slam. He extended his reached base streak to 18 consecutive games, which is tied for the second-longest by a Ute since the 2018 season. Hitting out of the leadoff spot,
Kai Roberts singled and walked twice, pushing his own streak to 16 straight games reaching base safely.
Landon Frei had an RBI single as well, logging a hit for the sixth straight contest.
Five different players registered multi-hit nights to help Utah (12-7-1) record 14 hits on the night.
Davis Cop had his first three-hit game as a Ute and nine-hole hitter
Carter Booth was a double short of the cycle, finishing 3-for-5 with his first four-RBI game at Utah.
It was also a solid night on the rubber for the pitching staff.
Micah Ashman worked two innings in his first career start, striking out two.
Dusty Schramm (1-0) went four innings out of the bullpen with a pair of strikeouts as well, and
Bransen Kuehl sealed the contest with the final three innings, earning his first career save with just a pair of singles allowed during Kuehl's outing. Ashman and Schramm were each responsible for a run, though neither were earned. All told, the Utes' arms did not walk a single batter all night.
After a 1-2-3 first inning with two strikeouts for Ashman, Northern Colorado scored one run in the second inning. But the Utes were unfazed and used some two-out magic to plate eight in the bottom half. Ultimately the club sent 11 men to bat in the frame.
Booth began the scoring with a single through the left side to score Cop from second base. A first-pitch base hit for Frei two batters later brought in Booth to put Utah ahead 2-1, then
Chase Anderson loaded the bases by working a walk. Following a Bears pitching change, Clarkson stepped into the batter's box and turned on the 1-2 pitch for his first career grand slam—driving in Anderson, Frei and Roberts in the process.
Jayden Kiernan, hitting out of the DH spot, scored later in the frame on
Alex Baeza's double to the warning track in center field, then Cop wrapped up the hit parade with his second single of the inning. It scored Baeza to extend the Utes' lead to 8-1, which also stood as the most runs in a single inning for Utah since February 2020.
In the third inning Booth pushed the advantage to 9-1 in favor of the Utes, turning on the first pitch and sending the offering far beyond the wall in left-center field.
The Utes weren't done with the big innings, coming back for a six-spot in the sixth albeit aided by three walks. Kiernan earned a free pass with the bases loaded to score Roberts, Baeza was hit by a pitch with Frei on third and Cop drove in a pair with a single to left center. Booth then tripled on a ball that rolled to the wall in right center, scoring Baeza and Cop on the play. At that point, Utah found itself ahead by a 15-2 score.
Clarkson added another homer after seventh inning stretch, this time a two-run shot. After Kiernan dropped a double just inside the right field chalk that bounced into the corner, Baeza singled to center field to score Kiernan and wrap up the scoring for the night.
Schramm's four-inning outing was his longest of the season and he retired the side in order during three of his four innings pitched. Kuehl surrendered an eighth-inning single which was quickly erased with a double play, then in the ninth the Bears singled with two outs before Kuehl finished the save.
The Utes scored the team's most runs in a game since March 15, 2019.
Utah will continue its six-game home stand with a Wednesday, March 23 rematch vs. Northern Colorado. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT at Smith's Ballpark.
