PULLMAN, Wash. – Looking for a Pac-12 road sweep, Utah took a two-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but Washington State rallied to push three across and walked off in a 5-4 ballgame on Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field. It was the first loss this season for Utah when leading after eight innings.
The Utes (17-10-1, 4-5 Pac-12) will look to bounce back on Tuesday night as the squad heads down Interstate 15 for a 6:05 p.m. MT matchup at Utah Valley in Orem, Utah.
Both
TJ Clarkson and
Matt Richardson had doubles for the Utes in the loss, with Clarkson's driving in a run in the eighth inning. Richardson scored twice on the day.
WSU took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but the lead was short-lived as Utah tied things up in the second inning. Richardson drove a one-out double to right field, his third of the weekend, then scored on a two-out opposite-field single by
Dakota Duffalo.
The advantage went back to the Cougars in the bottom of the third, when WSU knocked in Kodie Kolden on a ground out, aided earlier by a passed ball.
From there the game moved quickly until the seventh inning when the Utes tied the score at two, aided by an error. With one out, Richardson drew a four-pitch walk and
Carter Booth sprinted down the line for a bunt single. On an ensuing double steal, the throw down to third to try and nail Richardson got away, allowing Richardson to trot home with the tying run.
In the eighth inning, two key runs came across for Utah. After
Alex Baeza worked a leadoff walk and
Chase Anderson was hit by a pitch, Clarkson followed by lining a 1-2 pitch over the first baseman's head, down the right field line for an RBI double and handing the lead to Utah. Later in the inning,
Davis Cop blooped a single into left center field to bring in Anderson with an insurance tally and make it a 4-2 ballgame.
The Utes threatened for more in the ninth but stranded a runner at third base.
Utah sat down the WSU leadoff man with a strikeout in the bottom of the ninth, but after a walk, an infield single and error, the Cougars had runners in scoring position and the tying run at second base. A balk brought home one run, then a single to right field gave the home club the equalizer. A double to right center field brought home the winning run for Washington State.
Starting pitcher
Cam Day received a no-decision in his six-inning outing, during which Day allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, striking out two along the way.
Ben Kibbe relieved Day for 2.1 innings, responsible for one earned run on a base hit and a walk. The loss went to
Brady Maylett (0-1).
