SALT LAKE CITY – Utah fell to No. 2 nationally-ranked Oregon State by a 3-1 score on Sunday night in the series rubber game at Smith's Ballpark. The Utes put the tying run at second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Oregon State closer Ryan Brown answered with back-to-back strikeouts to bring the game to an end.
Utah (25-17-1, 10-11 Pac-12) has battled right to the wire in games with ranked opponents this season. Of the Utes' five losses to top-20 teams, four times the club has had the tying run, winning run or both on base in the ninth inning.
Five different Utes had a hit Sunday night, led by a triple for third baseman
Chase Anderson for the second straight game. First baseman
Alex Baeza had the lone RBI for the home side, bringing home Anderson on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Starting pitcher
Cam Day went seven innings, his longest outing as a Ute. Despite the loss, it was another quality start for Day (1-5), who allowed three runs on six hits and just one walk, recording four strikeouts.
Zac McCleve worked 1.2 innings of shutout ball in relief, and
Micah Ashman recorded the final out of the top of the ninth inning.
Oregon State plated a pair of runs in the first inning, with the Beavers extending their lead to 3-0 in the fourth frame.
Threatening in the bottom of the seventh with two on, Utah loaded the bases when left fielder
Carter Booth hit a sky-high chopper back to the mound, allowing everyone to reach safely. Oregon State was able to work out of the inning, however, still ahead by a 3-0 score.
With one out in the eighth, Anderson clubbed a well-hit fly ball to center field that got by a diving Jacob Melton and rolled to the wall. He went into third base standing up and came home on Baeza's sac fly two pitches later.
Trailing 3-1 in the ninth, Utah catcher
Davis Cop led off the bottom half with a hard-hit single to first base and went to second on a four-pitch walk to shortstop
Matt Richardson. The pair moved to second and third when center fielder
Dakota Duffalo put down a sac bunt back to the mound, but that would be the closest the Utes would get in the quest to equalize.
Utah is off from midweek action this week, and continues Pac-12 Conference play on May 6-8 with a road series at Arizona State.
