LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Cameron Daniell earned a first-place finish in the women's 5K and the University of Utah swimming team finished first in both relay events at the MPSF Open Water Swimming Championships, which were held on Saturday at Marine Stadium in Long Beach, Calif.
"We were incredible today," said associate head coach
Michele Lowry. "We took home team championships for both men and women and the team had incredible energy and so much support for one another. Open water is a totally different beast and the Utes performed incredibly. I am so proud of each and every one of them. We are hopeful the NCAA will recognize that there is strong support to add open water to the swimming lineup and we will be able to race more in the future."
The championships began with the men's 5K and
Dylan Becker and
Tomas Chocholaty both secured spots in the top three. Becker finished in 55:04 to take second while Chocholaty's time of 55:07 left him one spot behind his teammate in third.
The first Utah victory came courtesy of Daniell, who finished in 59:39 in the women's 5K to collect the top spot for her first win of the season. Right behind Daniell were
Abby Pope, who placed second, and
Milla Ruthven, who finished in third.
The Utes capped the day by outperforming their competition in a pair of relays, starting with the men's squad clocking in at 24:01 to best Grand Canyon University. In the women's relay, Utah finished atop a field of 11 teams, posting a time of 26:07 for the program's final triumph of the competition. The Utah women finished in first with 208 points, over 80 points better than second-place San Jose State, while the men's total of 190 also landed them atop the podium by a 50-point margin.
Looking Ahead
The Utes' next opportunity to compete will be back at home on Oct. 27, when they'll welcome the Arizona Wildcats to the Ute Natatorium.
