SAN DIEGO – Three different Utes drove in three runs,
Mariah Lopez tossed four innings of one-hit ball and
Amy Hogue earned her 400th victory as head coach of the University of Utah softball team on the first day of the 2023 season, which saw the Utes cruise past the Stonehill Skyhawks 8-0 and the Northern Colorado Bears 9-2 on day one of the La Jolla Invitational, which took place on Friday at the Triton Softball Field.
"I was happy with our start to the season," said Hogue. "We had goals beyond just winning two on this first day and we're pretty happy with what we accomplished from our list.
"There are so many things we want to achieve with this team, so the work is just beginning for us. I'm looking forward to getting as many of our players involved as possible in tomorrow's games as well. Our depth is a strength we have this year, so we will be working hard to try and find a way to get several of our players ready for a long and successful season."
This is just the latest milestone for Hogue, who a year ago became the program's all-time leader in career victories and is just three wins away from 600 in her collegiate coaching career. On this day, Hogue also saw her team reach 2-0 for the third time in the last four seasons.
Game One: Utah vs. Stonehill
Lopez got Utah's season off to an excellent start with a near perfect outing against the Skyhawks. The only baserunners she allowed reached on a second-inning single and a wild pitch on a third strike in the fourth. Lopez struck out eight, including three punchouts in the third and fourth innings, and retired nine of the last 10 batters she faced before turning things over to
Sarah Ladd for the final three outs.
On offense, the Utes didn't waste any time providing their pitcher with run support, tallying three runs in the first inning, followed by two more in the second. Two walks got the initial frame started and
Julia Jimenez sent both runners across by lacing a triple into right. Jimenez scored one batter later on a
Karlie Davison groundout.
Aliya Belarde got a rally started in the second when she singled, stole second and touched home on an
Ellessa Bonstrom safety. Bonstrom then proceeded to steal second, take third on a wild pitch and tally Utah's fifth run on a Jimenez sacrifice fly.
Utah pushed across the game's final three scores in the third and
Leilani Melendez drove in the first one on a single through the middle. After a wild pitch brought in
Stella Bennett to make the score 7-0, an RBI infield hit courtesy of
Sophie Jacquez capped off the scoring. Lopez and Ladd did the rest to ice the Utes' first victory of the year.
Game Two: Utah vs. Northern Colorado
Utah's second game started in a fashion very similar to the first, as the Utes put up multiple runs in each of the first two stanzas. The first inning started with two errors and an infield hit to load the bases and
Haley Denning dented home plate on fielder's choice to make the score 1-0. A few pitches later, Belarde recorded her team's second run on a wild pitch.
Belarde doubled her team's lead one frame later by dropping two-run double into short left field and she was in the middle of another Ute rally in the fourth. After her team put runners on first and third with one out, the junior infielder punched an RBI hit into right. One batter later, Bonstrom's double into right-center chased in two more for a 7-0 advantage.
Sydney Sandez was entrusted with protecting that lead and she did so through the first four innings. Over the first three frames, Sandez retired all nine batters she faced and prevented the Bears from hitting a single ball out of the infield. UNC managed to scratch out a run in the fourth, but Utah's starter stranded two more runners to conclude an outing in which she permitted only two hits over four innings.
Denning provided her squad's answer to the Bears first score of the afternoon with a two-run knock in the fifth and while UNC did add another in their half of the fifth, Ladd made sure that would be their final offensive outburst of the day. The senior left-hander handled the final three innings of the contest to collect her first save as a Ute.
