The 2023 season is upon us! We are currently sitting on a plane heading southwest…chasing the sunshine in San Diego. Opening day is tomorrow and the team is ready for it!
After all these years, the first trip is still one of my favorites. No matter the destination or the teams we will face, there is a level of anticipation for each of these young women that is fun to witness. I watch the athletes on the team train hard, day in and day out, with the hopes their work will somehow show up on the field, in a game, in a timely matter, that can help their team WIN. It is incredible to be a part of and I feel blessed to be able to continue to lead this group.
We have lots of newcomers, freshmen and transfers alike, who will be representing the Utes for the first time. I believe wearing "UTAH" across their chest is very meaningful to each of them. I have a lot of evidence that they are prepared to do their part to represent this school well and to make all of you proud.
The returners have all agreed this is the best team they have EVER been a part of. They have also agreed they have worked harder than ever and are the most prepared they've ever been going into the start of season. So needless to say, the expectations they have of themselves for an excellent season are extremely high.
I believe they have earned the right to believe big because of the work they have put in, and at the same time, as I know from my experience in this game, a lot of the work is actually about to begin. The game of softball has a lot of failure involved in it. It takes a whole bunch of things to fall into place in order to win. Even luck plays a part in it, which is extra difficult to deal with when you are on the wrong side of it!
So this team has some standards they have decided to live by during the year to have a path for success EVERY SINGLE DAY they take the field. You will see them devoted to the things this game demands from each and every one of them in order to be great…passion, effort, focus, persistence, leadership, attitude. They have plans to be accountable to all of these standards and they will trust me and the other coaches to communicate with them if they get off track. They have big plans for a big year and I'm excited for you to watch them do their thing.
Please take a look at the schedule and make plans to get out IN PERSON to see some games. If you can't make it out to every game, we will be sure to keep you in the loop of what's happening via social media, the weekly newsletters and the in-depth press releases. Even though almost every game will be covered with some sort of tv coverage or live stream, we love having you out in your RED to cheer loud for the Utes!
Well, my face hurts from smiling and we haven't even thrown the first pitch…you are going to want to watch this team…I promise.
See you at the field!
Go Utes!
