SALT LAKE CITY – It wasn't the beginning the Utah baseball team hoped for as the Utes trailed 6-0 after four innings of play, but the Utes strung together 11 unanswered runs to defeat Arizona State, 11-6, on Sunday in the three-game series finale at Smith's Ballpark.
Seven different players had a hit for Utah (8-11, 2-4 Pac-12). It was led by a 3-for-3 performance for shortstop
Matt Flaharty and two hits apiece by leadoff man and designated hitter
Elijha Hammill, plus first baseman
Jayden Kiernan (three RBI). Flaharty's three hits and three RBI were career-bests, while
Kaden Carpenter's three RBI were his most as a Ute as well.
Among several other Utes, Carpenter had two clutch plate appearances during the comeback effort. His sacrifice fly in the seventh inning brought in
TJ Clarkson to tie the score at 6-6, before he laced a two-run single in the eighth to put a bow on the 11-6 victory.
Lefty
Bryson Van Sickle (2-1) gave Utah five shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out four Sun Devils and scattering four hits in his outing to earn the win.
Zac McCleve then came on for the ninth in a non-save situation and shut the door.
Merit Jones started on the bump for Utah and received a no-decision.
After Utah was held without a hit for the first three innings and without a run into the fifth,
Dakota Duffalo broke the ice with a solo home run—his first of the 2023 season. Three batters later, Hammill knocked in Flaharty with a single into right field and cutting the deficit to 6-2.
The sixth inning moved along pretty quickly before Utah sent nine men to bat in the bottom of the seventh and tied the score with a four-run inning. Clarkson kicked off the scoring with a bases-loaded single that plated Flaharty, then after an ASU pitching change, Kiernan and
Davis Cop each were hit by a pitch. Hammill and
Landon Frei came across the plate, now with the score just 6-5.
With Clarkson now on third base and another Sun Devils pitching change made, Carpenter was called upon to pinch hit. He sent the first pitch to the warning track in right field, plenty deep enough to score Clarkson on the sac fly for the tying run.
Flaharty led off the eighth with a first-pitch base hit, then got all the way to third when he and Hammill perfectly executed a hit-and-run. It proved crucial in the long run, as Flaharty would score what became the winning run and Hammill took second on a wild pitch. Kiernan followed with a two-run single, then Carpenter's two-RBI knock gave Utah two more insurance runs in Cop and Kiernan.
The Utes will now break from Pac-12 Conference play, welcoming Northern Colorado to Smith's Ballpark for a quick two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6 p.m. MT and the game will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
