MINNEAPOLIS – The NCAA men's swimming and diving championships continued on Thursday inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center and
Jaek Horner,
Andrei Ungur,
Elias Petersen and
Luke McDivitt all competed in their first events at the meet.
In The Pool
Horner got the meet started in the pool for the Utes, swimming in the 200 individual medley. He finished with a final time of 1:46.45, which placed him 54th. In the 50 free, Ungur only narrowly missed out on topping his personal best of 19.80, finishing in 19.98. That mark put him in 51st.
"I thought they had some pretty good races," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "Both of them had their bonus events today and we have not really been focusing too much on these two events because their chance of scoring points of these two events are pretty slim. We are focused on Andrei's hundred backstroke tomorrow and Jake's hundred breaststroke tomorrow. Andrei has a real good chance of scoring in the A final and I think Jaek has a realistic chance of making it back to the consolation final."
On The Boards
McDivitt and Petersen got their first chance to compete in the 1m and Petersen achieved his team's top score, racking up 310.65 points, a result that placed him 35th. McDivitt's point total was 258.55 and he landed in 49th.
"Today was a bit of an introduction to the meet for Luke and Elias," said diving coach
Richard Marschner, "as they both have their stronger events coming up. I think they both did a really nice job of staying composed throughout an extremely high-level competition. The field of men really brought it today and the scores to qualify in the top-16 and top-8 were as high as I have seen. I'm very excited about what they can do tomorrow."
Up Next
All four Utes will be competing again on Friday, with Ungur racing in the 100 backstroke, Horner among the competitors in the 100 breaststroke and McDivitt and Petersen diving from the 3m.
