PROVO, Utah – University of Utah baseball fell to USC by a 4-0 score on Friday night at Miller Park, in the opening game of the teams' three-game series.
Utah and the Trojans will play game two of their three-game series on Saturday, returning to Smith's Ballpark for a 7 p.m. MT first pitch. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain and also air on 92.1 FM.
Despite taking the loss, left-hander
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola (2-1) allowed just one earned run (three total) in his five-inning start. He scattered seven hits during his outing, walking three batters and striking out one.
Cam Day took the Utes from there, dealing the final four innings in relief, striking out three against just one run allowed on four hits and a walk.
Davis Cop singled to extend his on-base streak to 10 straight games, while
Jayden Kiernan and
Landon Frei each have now reached safely in nine straight contests.
TJ Clarkson will look to start a new reached-base streak on Saturday after his 20-game run came to an end this evening.
USC went on the board with a run in the first inning, coming when Austin Overn scored amidst an infield double play.
In the top of the fourth, Utah's third defensive double play kept the deficit at just 1-0. The Trojans got the leadoff man aboard with hit by pitch, but a hit-and-run attempt with one out produced a fly ball to center field.
Dakota Duffalo was there to make the catch and quickly fire to first to double off the runner and end the inning. It came on the heels of
Bruer Webster,
Matt Flaharty and Kiernan turning a pair of 4-6-3 double plays in the first three innings.
The Trojans would get two more runs in the fifth inning after an error early on, swelling their lead to 3-0.
Utah's first big threat came in the bottom of the fifth when the Utes loaded the bases. But a fly ball to center field was caught to end the threat, and keep the Trojans ahead by a 3-0 margin.
The visitors wrapped up the scoring for the night when Carson Wells put a triple into the right field corner, plating Ethan Hedges.
Tyler Stromsborg went the distance on the mound for USC.
