HONOLULU, Hawaii –
Julia Jimenez and
Ellessa Bonstrom combined to drive in 11 runs while
Aliya Belarde and
Haley Denning scored 11 total runs as the University of Utah softball team cruised to a pair of lopsided victories, trouncing the Niagara Purple Eagles 13-0, followed by a 12-0 rout of the Pacific Tigers on Saturday on the Utes' second day at the Hawaii Spring Fling at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Utes have now matched their longest win streak of the season with five consecutive triumphs and their overall record is 14-4.
"What a day!" said head coach
Amy Hogue. "I'm so proud of the way our team played today. Outscoring our opponents 25-0 on the day was really great but we also cleaned up the little mistakes that we made yesterday. Base running was on point, pitchers worked ahead, hitters drew some walks when they didn't get anything over the plate.
"All kinds of highlights today for the Utes. [We're] looking forward to a short practice tomorrow and then back at it for two more games Monday."
Game One: Utah vs. Niagara
Utah blew open the game early against Niagara, piling up nine runs in the first two innings. A double steal executed by Denning and Bonstrom got the Utes' their first run and soon after, Utah loaded the bases and
Kaylah Nelsen and
Jordyn Gasper drew back-to-back walks to force in runs. A fielder's choice yielded the inning's fourth run before that rally came to an end, but the Utes went right back to work in the second.
Once again, walks played a key role in Utah's outburst, as a pair of base-on-balls got the stanza started and, after a Belarde base hit,
Karlie Davison came across on a fielder's choice. The next hitter was Jimenez and she tattooed the first pitch she saw to center for grand slam and a 9-0 lead. This was the first grand slam of Jimenez's collegiate career.
Jimenez drove in her fifth run of the contest in the fourth with an RBI single and Utah concluded the scoring by tallying three more in the fifth, two of them coming on
Elicia Espinosa's first long ball of the season and the last run scoring on a
Hailee White single.
Making her first start as a Ute,
Sarah Ladd was the recipient of Utah's first offensive explosion of the day, but her team's 13-run margin proved to be more than sufficient. In four innings, Ladd gave up only three singles, walked just one and struck out six to capture her second victory.
Sydney Sandez struck out the side in the fifth to clinch the win.
Game Two: Utah vs. Pacific
For the ninth straight game, the Utes put up a crooked number in the first inning, this time getting on the board courtesy of a Jimenez sacrifice fly. They tacked on three more in the third, one on a Belarde RBI double and two more when Bonstrom crushed a 1-0 pitch to left-center for a two-run round-tripper.
Bonstrom was at the center of another Utah uprising in the fourth, singling with one out to plate Davison, then combining with Belarde on a double steal that made the score 6-0.
Meanwhile,
Sydney Sandez was in complete control in the circle. She permitted only a single hit in four innings of work and struck out four compared to one walk. Sandez capped off her day by retiring the final eight hitters she faced and was rewarded for her efforts with her seventh win of the season.
The most profitable inning of the day for the Utes was the sixth, when they sent six runs across in a frame that began with two hits sandwiched around an error. Belarde cashed in the inning's first two runs with a double that was followed by a Bonstrom sacrifice fly.
Sophie Jacquez's RBI single made the score 10-0 and
Kendall Lundberg struck the final blow of the afternoon with a two-run tater to right-center.
Mariah Lopez, who pitched the fifth and the sixth, then recorded the final three outs.
