LAS VEGAS – Utah men's basketball center
Branden Carlson was named a First-Team All-Pac-12 selection on Tuesday while
Marco Anthony earned Pac-12 All-Defensive Team Honorable Mentions the league announced on Tuesday.
Â
Carlson becomes just the fourth Runnin' Ute to earn multiple all-conference honors joining Delon Wright, Brandon Taylor and Timmy Allen. Of the group, Carlson, Wright and Allen have garnered all-league honors back-to-back seasons. This is the eighth overall first-team accolade for Utah while Carlson becomes the seventh Ute to earn the distinction.
Â
The South Jordan, Utah, product has had a great senior season for the Utes averaging a team-best 16.0 points, 7.4 points and 2.1 blocks while scoring double-digit points in 21-consecutive games heading into the conference tournament. During his 21-straight games with double-digit points streak, Carlson broke his career-high twice.
Â
The first came against UTSA when he scored 27 points with nine rebounds on 10-of-14 points before tying that same mark against Oregon State with another 27 points performance to go along with 11 boards on 10-of-19 shooting. He then went on to score 28 points against Washington State at home in dominating fashion by hitting 11-of-12 from the field – including 3-of-4 from 3-point range – to go with his eight boards. That 28-point performance was sandwiched in the middle of three-straight games with at least 20-points.
Â
In Pac-12 play, Carlson reached double-digit points in all 19 games he's played in – including 22 points on 5-of-9 shooting from long range in Utah's victory over then-No. 4/4 Arizona at home. At the end of the regular-season, his 16.2 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game and 1.7 blocks per game in Pac-12 play ranks him fifth, seventh and fourth, respectively among league peers.
Â
Anthony's honorable mention on the all-defensive team is the first year-end award for the 6-5 guard and the sixth time a Ute has earned an award on the all-defensive team. In addition to being tasked with guarding the opposing team's top offensive threats, the San Antonio native also averaged 9.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists for Utah in conference play.
Â
This is the third-straight Runnin' Ute to earn honorable mention accolades on the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team with Brandon Taylor (2016) and Kyle Kuzma (2017) being the other two Utes to do so.
