Lopez becomes first Ute to ever receive two national pitcher of the week awards
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mariah Lopez was named the Division I Wilson/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after helping the Utes go 5-0 over a seven-day span that included a sweep of No. 5 Stanford. Lopez is the first Ute to ever receive two national pitcher of the week awards in one season.
Lopez was a central figure in Utah's sweep of the Cardinal and her overall numbers for the week included a 0.89 ERA, a 3-0 record and 29 strikeouts across 23 2/3 innings. In her first outing of the week, she threw 6 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run and picked up a win over BYU, then followed that with 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief for another triumph against Weber State.
In Utah's series opener against Stanford, Lopez tossed a complete game while permitting no earned runs with one walk and six strikeouts in a 4-1 Utah win. The Arizona native capped off her week with another solid start, holding the Cardinal to two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts on Sunday.
This honor comes just one day after Lopez claimed the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award, becoming the first Ute to accomplish that since Miranda Viramontes was in 2017. Lopez's first national pitcher of the week award arrived on Feb. 14, after she opened the season with three straight victories.
