SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men's basketball continues to add depth to its backcourt with the signing of Georgia Tech transfer

"We are excited to welcome Deivon Smith to our Runnin' Utes family," Coach Smith said. "Deivon is one of the most electric athletes in the country with incredible vision, leadership, toughness and experience. He is also a fantastic rebounder at the guard position. There is no doubt that our fans will instantly love the way he plays. We can't wait to have him join us for the upcoming season."
D. Smith comes to SLC after spending the last two seasons at Georgia Tech playing under Josh Pastner. Not unfamiliar with the Utes, D. Smith had a solid game against Utah in the Ft. Myers Tip-Off Event. The Decatur, Ga., native went for 15 points, six rebounds and four assists against the Runnin' Utes, however Utah got the upper hand as it prevailed against the Wramblin' Wreck 68-64.
He ended last season averaging 7.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists to go with a 2.8 assist/turnover ratio while starting in 13 of the 23 games he played in. D. Smith ended his sophomore season with a trio of double-doubles.
His first season with the Yellow Jackets saw him play just under 20 minutes a game while averaging 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 24 games. He nearly had a double-double against Wisconsin scoring nine points with a career-high 11 rebounds. He followed up with a couple games scoring 16 points – which was a season-high for the 6-1 guard. He first scored 16 against North Carolina before helping Georgia Tech defeat Clemson with 16 points and eight rebounds to go with a season-best six assists.
D. Smith started his collegiate career playing for Ben Howland at Mississippi State where he was just 1-of-3 players to see action in all 33 games while also leading the Bulldogs to the NIT Championship game that year. He started in the first three games of the season to kick off his collegiate career and added five other starts in SEC action. The dynamic guard dished out a career-high nine assists against Iowa State to go with his 10 points at home. D. Smith also had a good showing against Texas A&M with seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.
At the prep level, D. Smith was a top-100 recruit according to 247Sports composite ranking (No. 63) and ESPN (No. 69). D. Smith was named the 2020 Gwinnett Prep Sports Player of the Year as a senior after averaging 17.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 3.5 steals. As a sophomore he led Grayson High School to a Region 8- AAAAAAA championship before guiding the team to a final four appearance in 2017-18.
With the addition of D. Smith, the Runnin' Utes now have four newcomers having previously signed
Cole Bajema (Michigan / Washington),
Lawson Lovering (Central HS / Colorado) and
Hunter Erickson (BYU / SLCC).
