First of a three-part Fall Camp series spotlighting 2023 additions to the Utes
The Newcomer Notebook is a three-part Q&A series featuring some of the latest additions to the Utah Football team across offense, defense and special teams. The series kicks off with defensive end Logan Fano—an in-state Ute out of Spanish Fork now taking reps opposite his brother, offensive lineman Spencer Fano.
Â
What's it like to have grown up in Utah and now represent your home state with the Utes?
"Anybody that knows me knows that I'm super proud to be from Utah. Spanish Fork, born and raised. It's meant a lot to me to represent a small community in Utah. A lot of guys are from the Salt Lake or the West Valley area. It means a lot to me and my brother. Everything we do, it's called 'F.T.F.'—For the Fork. Being part of Utah and playing at the U is huge for me. I get to play for my home state and I get to do it with my little brother."
Â
What have you learned from your brother, Spencer Fano, especially now being opposite each other in the trenches?
"Growing up, Spencer and I actually never played together. We were both running backs growing up. I didn't make the transition to defense until I was in high school. I was a little too tall then to play running back, so they kicked me over to defense. I was Karene Reid's backup as an outside linebacker.
Â
"Spencer and I didn't start playing together until high school. I was a senior and he was starting as a sophomore. That was our first time really playing together on opposite sides of the ball. Being up here at Utah, it's been huge for each of our development. We go against each other every single day (in practice), we're always thudding against each other, hitting each other. It's been good to have someone that I live with and am so close to be able to give me insights from the other side of the ball."
Describe your close ties with Gabe and Karene Reid.
"My dad was pretty much adopted into the Reid family. I was around Karene and Gabe a lot growing up. I'd run around and try to follow their example. They probably thought I was really annoying growing up, because I was like Karene's shadow all the time. It's funny that I've followed him and Gabe over here to the U and fulfilled that shadow nickname."
In high school, you played for a Utah state championship inside Rice-Eccles Stadium. Is it a full-circle moment to now call RES your home stadium?
"It's painful that you remind me that we played in Rice-Eccles. [laughing] We got thumped. But it's cool to play in the stadium now with the team that calls it home. It was also super cool to be able to play with my boys in high school, playing on what we called 'the carpet.' It was fun to play on the carpet but it'll be good to play there as a Ute."
What do you like to do outside of football?
"I'm a big anime fan. I love watching anime. Whenever I have free time, I watch anime. I play a lot of Fortnite. I'm the best UFC player on the team—haven't lost to anybody yet. I'm like any other kid, really. It's good that I have football, because I'd probably be an anime kid and play a lot of video games if I had all the time I wanted."
